Paula held off telling anyone for so long because she was waiting to swing a deal with a diabetes drug company before coming forward. As a result people are criticizing her for not slimming down her dishes to promote diabetes prevention, saying it is a betrayal to the public.
Frankly I'm stunned by people's reactions. Why do people think that Paula is obligated to divulge her health history to anyone? It's her health history. We would never demand the average citizen go walking around with their health conditions tattooed on them for everyone to see. Not to mention it’s hardly a betrayal when the woman has never been on the front lines of healthy eating.
Paula talks about moderation on her show, but her true niche is homey, sinfully decadent cooking. If people can’t clue in that her throwing a whole stick of butter into the frying pan is probably not the healthiest, then I think more general education on healthy eating is needed.
I also don’t hold anything against her for choosing to go the drug promotion route rather than volunteering her time to the cause of prevention. She’s a business woman and she has the right to make these decisions. Others will take her place as a role model and leader for prevention.
Not every cook needs to be on the healthy end of the spectrum, though it certainly helps if there are more. Just like music there are a million different styles of cooking. If Paula Deen doesn’t want to take the healthy cooking healthy living approach, I’m happy to fill the space.
