Unfortunately, it also came with a little food poisoning thanks to the contaminated bacon jelly on top. So it's hard to say what will be coming our way this year. We will have to speculate for now based on what is coming out at the early season fairs and carnivals in the US. The major themes this year appear to be beer, pickles and deep frying. Here are a few of the contenders. Any guesses if one of these will make it to Toronto?
You can get them outside of the fair, but this one was last spotted in Kansas. For people that prefer something a little less sweet and REALLY like pickles. Personally I think this would just confuse my brain.
Seen at at fair in Maui. Hawaii is known for enjoying deep fried treats and this one looks like it'll make your heart skip a beat....or maybe all of them.
These babies are popular in the southern USA and were spotted at a fair in North Carolina. It's a pickle that has been brined in Koolaid. Is it me, or does the Koolaid add a nice 'radio active' look to the pickles?
Spotted at the Massachusetts State fair. It's exactly what it looks like. Deep fried balls of dough stuffed with jelly beans. This one concerns me because I had a friend as a child who made herself a gummy bear sandwich and microwaved it. The melted bears quickly cooled in her mouth and pretty much sealed it shut till she chewed her way out. I could see similar issues with this treat.
This one actually isn't that bad. If you are worried it has meat, good news, it does not. It basically fudge with nuts shaped to look like salami and served on a cracker like salami. Pretty tame compared to the other contenders.
It's not surprise these were in Dallas at the State Fair. Pretzel dough wrapped around beer and deep fried. I'd be a little nervous about biting into these and getting a mouth full of warm/hot beer. That really doesn't seem appealing. Maybe just get a hot pretzel and a cold beer?
So these are the contenders for the year. What do you think? Yum? Yuck? Why? Which do you think will make the cut if any for Toronto Exhibition?
Happy eating and happy Friday!
