Yogurt is one of those foods that seems to have a health halo wrapped around itself so tight it's almost in a choke hold. Yogurt is supposed to be something that is good for us after all. It's in the Food Guide, has lots of calcium, protein and other vitamins, so what could be so wrong with Yoplait?
How about 6.5 teaspoons of sugar per single 170ml serving container?
That's how much you will get from their original strawberry flavor. And Yoplait is not the only guilty party for packing in the sugar. A single serving container of Activia flavored yogurt is only about 100ml and includes only 2.5 teaspoons of sugar. If we increase the serving size to match the Yoplait serving size of 175ml it's brings it up to just over 4.25 teaspoons of sugar! Danone's Greek Style flavored yogurts bring in just about the same amount of sugar as well.
With this much sugar, you might as well toss back a handful of gummy bears. It's about the same amount of sugar.
My advice it read the labels. When it doubt, try to choose low fat, plain yogurt and add in your own fruit. Your body will thank you.
