Gourmet food trucks have been gaining popularity over the last few years thanks to shows like Eat Street. It brings high quality food at a very reasonable price (no pesky over head costs like waiters or tables).
I'm always on the search for places that provide quality food and unique dishes.
Today I was wandering downtown Hamilton and came across the Meatball Shoppe. This truck specializes in the classic meatball subs, but with their own flare on every version. From classic pork and marinara to turkey with sauteed leaks. A pretty new truck seeing as the sign said 2012 on it. I decided to try their Ragin Vegan meatballs. A quick note: not actually vegan. they do have egg and cheese in them. So more like a Ragin Veggie I suppose.
The meatballs are made from a mix of brown rice, veggies and lentils. Topped with curry and roasted red pepper sauce. I also had their coleslaw on the side.
I have to say, the portions are MASSIVE, they couldn't even close the box for me. It could have just been the super sized bun though. I'm not a huge bread person, but with all the sauce I can see how anything less would just fall apart. What blew me away was the meatballs themselves. At one point I thought there had to be meat in them. The texture was like juicy ground pork, but I could see lentils still in the ball. Must be their secret spice mix they won't share.
Overall I loved this dish, though I could have used a little less bread. I really just used the bun as a bowl for eating all the delicious meatball goodness out of.
Definitely worth checking out if you have the time. Just bring a friend or a big appetite!
